Can anchors be installed on an angle?

Hi Guys,

We are currently working on a project that is on site and the contractor has adopted an unapproved detail to connect the small SHS posts supporting the roof to the concrete slab below. (Sketch detail of the contractors detail has been attached)

The question is: Can the attached detail be designed and certified using Hilti products and the SA TS 101 Design Methodology? Our concerns are mainly related to the small edge distance at the top of the anchor as well as the inclined nature of the anchor. The bolts will be loaded in both shear and tension due to the vertical bracing.

Thanks very much for your help.

Kind Regards,
Thomas Fryer

Answer Accepted

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your question.

In general, design of anchoring points as per SA TS 101/AS 5216 assumes that the anchor is installed perpendicular to the concrete surface, thus the design method to calculate concrete cone and other failure modes can be applied. Inclined anchor will have different concrete engagement and steel reaction, hence design to SA TS 101/AS 5216 will not be applicable.

We have some information that can aid in designing inclined anchors. Please send us an email through autechnicalcentre@hilti.com with the loading requirement and we will be able to assist you further on this case
Cheers,
Dom
